How big a sphere and what kind of wall thickness can you tolerate?

You could try a wooden sphere. A woodturner to make you two halves
 on a lathe.

McMaster Carr has polypropylene hollow balls that are 5.9" in diameter
1     3748K19     $5.52 per Pack of 1

You could try some of the plastics shops like Modern Plastics but it
will probably be expensive.
