Subject: Re: Front Panel Designer Problem

sorry, only meant to say that questions abt FPD are appropriate and weclome here. i guess i overreacted to the advice "don't use FPD", which seemed out of line.

i've been doing more panels in FPD lately... it has all the disadvantages guy mentioned (expensive, in-elegant software, windoze, etc.), but it's accessible, the software is free, and the results look sharp. when i figure in my time & annoyance as well, or compare to commercially available panels, they aren't all that expensive.

but i've done the vast majority of my panels (over 100) by printing out designs on paper, mounting onto thick doublesided PCB material (for ease of working, i don't have access to sheetmetal tools), and covering with either matte spray or self-adhesive laminate film. the first ones i did are going on 10 years old, get heavy use including gigging, and are holding up well.

i would LOVE to have access to laser tools, or other panel methods, especially as i get deeper into doing serge-inspired designs... but there are so many aspects to SDIY to learn (i just taught myself PCB layout programs to make gerbers, after using PNP for years), and only so much time, and money for tooling...

so, anyway, just meant to say this is a good place to discuss all approaches; each has it's place.

peace
b
