i agree.  i too think they look fine as is and the boxes arent needed.

gates & triggers
would it make more sense to swap the positions of the GATE and TRIGGER outputs so the associated hi-low led indicator sits next to the GATE output instead?

Thanks for the clarification. I prefer switches that go up/down, not
left/right. I generally assume (thinking digitally) HIGH = UP = ON,
LOW = DOWN = OFF. I don't think you need to labels, or boxes, for the
switches, I think that would just make it look cluttered. I say leave
it as is.
