I would recommend taking some time to study an op-amp primer:

If you do a web search, you will find several others. There are also
virtual labs on several manufacturers' websites that allow you to
plug in different values and see what happens, such as this one:

While all sorts of complicated things can be built using op-amps, by
learning two basic circuits -- the inverting amplifier, and the
non-inverting amplifier -- you will be able to answer all of your
mixer/inverter questions.
