Hey, I like it!
The Memotron is to the Mellotron like the Choptigan is to the Optigan!
Of course you can't chop the M400 like some have done to Hammonds and
Optigans, but...well...there ya GO! Put a set of those origal M-400
knobs on it (the black bakelite looking ones with the off-yellow
centers), and you got something a bit chop-o-Tron looking, roadworthy
and reliable. The sound samples though seemed a bit too perfect or
digitized or something not quiiiittte right. Maybe they had the reverb
up too much to hide any imperfections. But I guess it's all about
taking it out and about with less fear of breakdown or breakup &
that's what will probably sell a few.
Remember someone on eBay a few years ago put up for sale a modern
electronic keyboard imbedded into a home-made low-profile verison of a
M-400 cabinet?
It looked kind of Chamberlin-esque only it was white and had the black
feet...!
Otherwise, get some good Mellotron insurance if you're taking one of
the first-gen's on tour. And make sure you have mention of your prized
possession on your homeowner's/renter's policy in case something
happens to it. I've had mine in one spot for twelve years...recently I
moved it away from the wall & that sure reminded me I need to shampoo
the carpet.
