Analog Tape is Back
AES shows seem to move in trends. A year ago, tape was pretty much
declared dead. Well, fuggitaboutit!!! This time
around, tape seems to have made a resurgence; not necessarily in terms of
recorders, but new tape sources. Quantegy
showed a full line of studio products, with GP9, 499, 456 and a range of
digital, from DASH to ADAT stock. Those whose
tastes run to Euro flavors were pleased to see RMGI showing your fave
Emtec formulations, beginning with 1/4-inch
SM911, and followed later with SM900 and others. And ATR Magnetics -- a
spinoff of Michael Spitz' ATR Service Corp --
offered a preview of its lines of pro analog tape in all widths that will
begin coming out of a new state-of-the-art
facility in the months to come.
This tape revival is great news, especially for those of us who crave that
fat, sweet sound of analog tape. We are
lucky to be in an industry that can choose from a rich palette of tools --
both new and old -- to work with. Just
don't forget to print alignment tones on the head of your next project!
