Did the machine need much work done on it?

Listening to the radio show, the flute's sounded wonderfully grainy,
I'm guessing it's the orginal tapes in there still?
It had green mold growing inside it due to damp and didn't really function.

The sound was so grainy on the broadcast because they miked the monitor speaker and didn't use the line out, which is clear.  I suppose they were trying to reinforce the retro nature of the instrument and in a way it worked.  However, the instrument sounds a lot better DI'd through a desk.
