Student arrested in alleged eBay scam

A C.W. Post student from Farmingdale was arrested yesterday for
auctioning musical instruments, cell phones, computers and theme park
tickets that she never owned on the Web site eBay, Nassau
investigators said.

Between March and August of last year, Alexis Levine, 25, of 675
Conklin St., put photographs of the items on eBay, then collected
checks and money orders sent as payment from at least 14 buyers in the
United States and Canada, investigators said.

Levine collected more than $10,000 in bogus sales, including $585 for
Walt Disney theme park tickets, and $121.75 for an Armstrong open hole
flute, according to investigators.

She was arraigned in First District Court yesterday on first-degree
scheme to defraud. She was released without bail, but could not be
reached for comment.

Investigators said Levine took the precaution of using multiple screen
names on the Internet, including mishelabela, jennyrosemusic, and
italiansteakbeauty.

But when it came to instructing buyers on whom to make checks out to,
and where to send them, she made it easy for investigators by using
her real name and address, detectives said.

If she is found guilty, Levine could be sentenced to up to 4 years in
prison.
