OH, and was the blackone sold that way or is that an owner mod?  Is it just differentlyshaped knobs, or are there functional differences?  And expensiveor not, they both LOOK awful purty.

Greetings Jon  et al ,

The 400SM repaint and different control panel/knobs were fitted by (un)SoundSales
in Connecticut circa 1977-1979. This was the same timeframe that themagnificent oak
and maple cabinets were available at a cost of ~ $450 as an optionduring M400
upgrades (SMS3, PML preamp/lineamp, low-noise mods,custom tapes,etc).

Also bear in mind that Mellotrons (pardon,Novatrons) were simultaneouslyavailable
in the UK for approximately £800-850 (US$ 1700-2000 ). Bill importedthese,rebadged
them as Mellotrons, "reconditioned" them, and sold them for 2X originalcost.  Hmmm.....
My original documents of the time bear witness to this factoid....

NEWS UPDATE:  Perchance,I recently drove past Bill/Nancy Eberline'sformer
residence in Cornwall Bridge,CT  . I introduced myself to thenew owners,
who immed.mentioned that they found "stuff"  stashed-away in thegargage rafters .
They were always curious why there were so many electrical outletsin the gargage.

Anyhoo, these two boxes of "stuff" were sold at a Sunday tag-sale toan unknown person.
She said things like circuit boards, wires, and "metal blocks" were amongthose things
accidentally discovered in false ceiling in the garage during remodelling.

Some "vintage" Mellotron parts from 20+ years back have now resurfaced??
Wonder what else lies in wait to be uncovered(dug-up) from the "old-days?"
Cheers, Jerry Korb
