I use a presonus blue tube mic pre.I insert the mic pre between the output of the mellotron and the power source or amp. You can adjust the amount of tube saturation to the on-board 12ax7 tube that is in the tube mic pre. I find that the results are superb with a gentle warming and rounding of the sounds. It takes the shrillness out of the violins and makes a softer and warmer violin. Best of all you can determine the amount of tube warmth via the drive control. Is this device similar to what you are describing Andy? Is it like a tube mic pre?
