Dear All,
Thoughts from Norm....
Although the reason we all probably got a Mellotron in the first place was
for the original sounds, things are moving on.
The 'Russian choir' is awesome (and will definitely be on the next set of
tapes I get).
Although I have a frame with 3 violins, flute and 'cello it rarely ends up in
the machine and is only used on sessions where people want 'that sound'.
The frame that spends most time in is string section, 8-voice choir and IMcD
flute. Occasional use from M300 violin, brass and oboe (of course).
Point is that there are new sounds coming, which is good, as it prolongs the
life of the instrument.
Buying frames (and cases) will never be a cheap option but at least they are
still being made.
At the end of the day the choice is a personal one. I still prefer the unique
sound / playing experience of a real Mellotron whatever sound is coming
through it.
As for new things. It would be good if some of the accessories such as volume
pedal, protectamuff etc could be manufactured again at a reasonable price.
Finally the impossible, an in-tune oboe ;-)
All the best,
Norm
PS: Of course I'm not allowed to comment on the Fairlight sounds...
