The "vintage keys" version may have been released last year, but it's
the same underlying technology as the Proteus 2000 module, which is a
few years old now. E-mu appear to be dropping hardware, unfortunately -
my local music shops tell me that the expansion ROMs for the proteus
2000 ere blown out a few months ago, damnit, as I had intended to buy
the "B3" and "sounds of the ZR" ROMs. I have the Vintage ROM, and it's
pretty good. The mellotron sounds are OK, about as good as I've heard
from a ROMpler box. Except for the brass, that is, that one is really
horrible. A big upside to the P2000 is that if you can get hold of an
E-mu ultra sampler, you can (can? Probably "could" at this rate!) get a
32mb flash ram chip, that you can put your own sounds into.
Theoretically it is possible to ditch the included sounds, and replace
the entire instrument ROM (128mb, there are 4 slots altogether) with
your own samples.
