Yeah, I was saddened that John Hawken wasn't involved in this concert. I followed the band quite allot during the seventies, managing a few drinks with him, particularly when they came to Oxford. What a nice unassuming guy. Greatly underrated as far as I'm concerned. One of my all time great Strawbs tunes looks like being on the Japan DVD. "The life Auction" from the album Ghosts. It has tron oozing from every bar. The 1975 DVD was filmed when, in my opinion, the band were at the peak in terms of writing and performance. Actually, watching the Chiswick House concert reminds me what a bloody great drummer Rod Coombes was and still is. I'm always amused when they perform "Part of the Union". Dave Cousins seems quite at ease singing it now. But at the time, it was widely known that he hated the song with a vengance.Ah well, age mellows things I guess. So three cheers for John Hawken, one the great unsung advocates of the Mellotron. God bless him, wherever he is.
