Hello y'all,
There is a snobbery that exists regards generating tapes from tape copy masters over generating tapes from digital files. The bandwidth in the mellotron and the bandwidth of the recordings means that a 32 bit sample rate would easily reproduce everything in the catalogue with no detriment. We use 44.1 at 24 bit depth. The idea of having copy masters to make tapes from is unrealistic in the modern world. If you work out the variations you'd need based on the sounds available in our library, it would be ridiculous. In addition, we have original sets made by Les that we refer to, making sure there is no drift in sonic accuracy and there isn't. Having said that, there were glaring differences between Les's copy masters. We try to reference the recordings that seem the most consistent. We have also used the ears of well seasoned mellotronists and they have all been happy with tapes recorded from a digital source.
I know little of Protools but I know it would not be detrimental either. Why argue against this and then perform with an M400 hopelessly out of kilter? It's a complete nonsense Mr Gallo!
Best,
