Subject: [Mellotronists] Tape Echoes/ M4000!!!

From: "Mark Wallis" <markstuartwallis@...>

Cheers Norm. How's the Swarfy Satellite getting on?

Nice impersonation- absolutely bang on. Reminds me of one of the mad priests
in the series 'Father Ted'.. "What's your favourite humming noise?"

I rather like the 'sssshwip' noise that my tapes make on retracting,
personally.

I've never met a tape echo that I didn't like, however limited the spec. may
sometimes be.. I've worked on many and owned one or two (WEM/Watkins and a
Melos).. Rolands are just lovely- beautifully made and so versatile. Has
anybody out there ever encountered the early 60s Telefunken machines?
They're built like Panzers, all valve, 'Magic Eye' level indicator..
Gorgeous. Lots of eminently polishable brass too.

Copicats rock though. I use them all the time on keys and guitar. The lack
of varispeed on most models is a limitation but who cares? I can get
everything from Scotty Moore slapback to Syd Barrett self-oscillating sonic
attack with 2 controls. Switchable power to the motor (always worthwhile)
gives some terrifying sounds on wind-down. Hugh Banton from Van der Graaf
Generator used to run his Hammond into one .. stop the motor.. wind it back
up and it sounds like monsters are coming up through the floor.

Sometimes all I need in life is the Valve Copicat, a Selmer Zodiac amp and
a Telecaster. Keeps me happy for hours.

p.s. I love the idea behind the air filtration/internal pressurisation in
the M4000! Just wonderful! Didn't a similar system allow Zeppelin passengers
to have a smoke room (!) ? Was that your inspiration, guys?

Do you do 'easy terms' ?

Randomly,

Wallis x
