(Heh-heh, you believe they were thinking of you when they filmed
this?)
Mike Pinder explains it somewhere on his web site
(http://www.mikepinder.com). The Moodies are miming to the
instrumental tracks of the recording on this, but the vocal tracks are
real. The keyboard not a Mellotron, it's a Hammond A3. (Hey, at
least the Hamond A3 is shaped roughly like a Mellotron; imagine if
they only had a Farfisa Combo Compact available.) And I don't think
the bass is plugged in.
Back when this film was made that approach was very typical, just as
in the MTV 80's dancing to a playback of the song in front of a camera
was typical. After all, the Moodies were considered a pop singing
group at the time, and this film probably wasn't intended to be a
definitive cultural reference.
