This technique can be replicated nicely using a processor box with a
detune effect.

When recording, I use a 10 band EQ and trim off the bottom end 100%
(The first 3 bands). In the 1st two bands there's just hummm,
rumble,thumps and trucks. With some 'tron tapes, the 3rd band
contains useful sound.
Digital multi-effects boxes AND digital recording effects plug-ins
are mostly very good for Mellotron output. A dash of Lexicon's
Leslie effect (rotary) with a pinch of dark plate reverb is...to die
of.
