I can clear this up. In Chicago to perform at the Electric Playground during their first tour, the place got torched overnight by the mob (I'm not kidding) and while their equipment wasn't destroyed, at least one of the two mellotrons KC was carrying got very wet. The road crew and band tried desperately to dry it out with hair dryers (successfully according to Ian), but management and the band thought it best to send over another from Olde Blighty, just in case.
This third mellotron was the one sold to Genesis (although I suspect it might have been the one you could dub "Old Niagara"). In any event KC wound up the tour with THREE MkIIs in tow!
