I've spilled 98% sulfuric on paper, and it turns charcoal black in
seconds. I assume your after something a little easier to handle. Normal
20% sulfuric (car battery strength) eats holes in cotton after about 24
hours. Might do the same to paper since they are both derived from
cellulose.
Have you tried strong sodium hydroxide ? I think this can soften paper.
