Heh, it would be better to use the plates with the
iron.
I find that all I need to do to get good contact
is just put a couple sheets of plain old paper
between the iron and the PCB. The paper will
compress just a little on the high spots of the
iron and still gives a little bit of pressure to
the areas where the iron normally wouldn't press
very hard.
