Spray etching is probably the way to go if you want to minimise the amount
of etchant. Something like an aquarium heater with the element in a glass
envelope should work for heating the etchant; it doesn't need to be all that
hot. Or, you can simply heat the base of the tank from the outside. I think
that is how it is done with those small etching systems that you can buy.
