I too.
It is worth the effort.
I create/modify the footprints as i need them in a design.

I still don't use/understand the technology files.
I think i really should read the help.
Most time i do hand routing (and always hand placing).
I check my designs myself for errors (drc disabled most time).
Maybe for preofessional pcbs it it more important...
