I used Imagemagick command line tool on my linux box...

  $  convert -density 600 traces.pdf -threshold 50% traces-bw.pdf

Wonderful, that looks perfect. Not saying this is the cause of my problems, but at least I now know the images are truly black. I have now managed to get a clear acetate sheet stuck in my laser printer! It's been one of those jobs <LOL> Once I get it out i will compare the images from your pdf's with the originals when actually printed. Sincerest thanks to you for doing this, and to everyone else who has replied, made excellent suggestions, and made images.
