Subject: Thru-hole to SMD transition

Am thinking about making this circuit using SMT:

Automotive Voltage Indicator - RED - Page115

Yesterday I found this cheat sheet for selecting surface-mount components:

http://www.hamradio.cc/electronics/SMD_lookup/smd_lookup.php

So I know to look for which surface-mounted devices.   Then must

peruse their datsheets for allowable voltages, currents, how much power

they can handle, etc.

I already know to only use 1206 0805 and 0603 packages for passives,

if I want to hand-solder.

Obviously, I must breadboard the circuit using these new components

before routing the board.     So my question is What tools do I need to get for breadboarding circuits using SMT?   Not just this circuit, but ones with IC's too.
