Hmm, not sure about a free tool. I know that router solutions product does that easily, but I don't know if the demo has that feature enable.

I've also used GC-Prevue, and Viewmate from Pentalogix, but I don't know if you can export or save the gerber back out. I will check it out in the morning.

I did take a quite look at Pulsonix. It looks pretty slick, so I'm going to give it the demo a shot on a small board to see how it goes.

I'm in a similar boat with my old microsim pcboards/specctra package
since they were bought out by orcad, then cadence. You mentioned a
gerber too to generate negative images; do you know of a free tool
that will invert a gerber then export it in gerber? --negative plot.
Some board houses now won't accept innerlayers in positive mode
anymore and my tools are just old enough they don't do negative
layers (at least I can't find any way of doing it).
