Only ever use collets for precision work.

The proxxon collets do not fit the dremel.

My homemade press is similar, but much wider for side stability and using thrust ball bearings to pivot the arm.

I've never measured the runout on the proxxon and can't find my dial indicator for some weeks now.
Need to get a new one.

The runout on the collet nut is useless, you would have to measure the bore with a lever type indicator.

I believe the dremel shaft may well be good enough, but the collets are really poor compared to the proxxon ones.

The dremel design has some advantages too, it is better for high side loads since the shaft is one piece while the proxxon is split at the motor.

It looks like I shall choose the MB 140/S as others are having success with it and I only want to use it in the vertical.

That video you pointed me to Stefan was impressive in terms of speed of hole drilling, but as you say there is no indication of whether it uses a carbide drill or not  ( it was the MB140/S in the video)


Stefan, do you use collets or a chuck for your carbide drills? I note the Proxxon can take either.

Brett, I would be interested in seeing yours too if you want to put the photos there too.

I also put a photo of the collets that came with the Dremel - they seem to be the major cause of the problems I am having. You may notice in one of the pics that there is a broken carbide drill piece lying on the table. I used the remaining shank of the drill to measure the runout.  Even with great care and slow advance, I managed to break three carbide drills in about 4 holes - the runout was so bad with the Dremel  1/8 in collet.

Do any of you think I could fix the problem by buying the Proxxon collets and putting them in a Dremel?

Do they fit?  They are steel and have 3 segments.

If the collets do fit and add no extra runout, is 4 /1000 in measured on the collet nut likely to break carbide drill bits?


I notice the Proxxon is spec'd at 3/100 mm which is just slightly more than 1/1000th in. but it does not state if that is the motor/collet shaft or the total system of motor+collet+drill bit.


Stefan, Brett, have you ever measured your runout  (at the drill shank)?
