I suggest that you check your maps again. For example here:

Since I am originally from Sweden, here is a tidbit: The Swedish Vikings used to be called the Russ. They traveled extensively in what is now Russia all the way down to the Mediterranean and for example, Kiev was a Viking trade center. That is how Russia got its name.
