I haven't had a single problem with a corrupted download since the days of using a 1200bps modem back before there was error checking and correction.
All PCB CAD packages have a fairly steep learning curve. If you're just starting out, give ExpressPCB a go, once you're reasonably comfortable, download KiCad and try that out. Follow one of the many tutorials and you'll pick it up fine. Don't try to skip drawing the schematic first, that and the resulting netlist will save you much frustration later.
