I had that idea and did some looking around. Apparently it does work, but it's difficult to get good enough resolution and you get nasty fumes burning off the paint or whatever you use.

A better idea may be to use a violet laser diode to make a photoplotter to expose photosensitive resist, but aside from the cool factor it's probably no better than just printing a pattern.
