I do the same with a lexmark. There is a difference between a new and
a well used cartridge, it may still print just fine on paper but no
good for PCBs so I keep one in the original packaging just for PCBs.
Original toner cartridges for older printers are cheap on ebay, like
$10 max., but check prices before buying a printer. People with broken
printers get rid of unused cartridges that way. Do not buy
remanufactured ones for PCBs, ever.

The cartridge has the photo-sensitive drum etc. built-in. So I buy an original cartridge and use it only for PCB printing. When not, I store it in the original black light-blocking bag it came in. I use this "lousy" Samsung printer from time to time for regular printing. But it is lousy, especially with refilled cartridges. The tray paper feed has failed completely as of late. But if I take my "pristine" little used cartridge out of the bag and plug it into the Samsung, I get really good results. I guess what I'm saying is buy a low cost laser printer that has ALL the parts built into the cartridge, fuser, photo-drum, etc. CHEAPEST laser printers are like this. They want you to PAY and PAY for the cartridge. But in-fact, for small scale laser transfer PCB's you turn the tables on them. You only use the printer for PCB's and store the cartridge in a dark safe place until you need it. Two years and the cartridge on the ML1750 printer works fine. I can't speak for how many years this will last.
