I am happy with my HP-1006 that is in the $100 range. I had a Brother..... darn, what was the number. 2000 series and it did require a HOT temperature for the toner. Inside the cover it said "Caution - 415 degree F"
You had to get the temperature up over 400F to get decent toner transfer..
