Hi gnuvve,

If your on linux, there is a no-cost alternative to Microsoft office,
it is called Openoffice and can be downloaded from www.openoffice.org.
It is a similar suite as microsoft"s but you do not have to pay
ANYTHING thanks to GPL.
Which linux flavor do you have,(Red hat,Opensuse,Ubuntu,Debian),
download the corresponding RPM or DEB package, check if your version of linux is or is not 64-bit before downloading.
This package is can read doc,ppt,xls although it is not made by it.
It can open the usual Microsoft office documents.
