I've got a $99 HP P1006 (from Staples) that I'm quite happy with.
Nice dense prints.

I've also got a Brother HL-2140 that I'm not so impressed with. Lots
of dropout, not very dense prints.

This is from a perspective of someone who uses the laser printer to do
toner resists for PCBs, so density and coverage are important. That's
really my only criteria for good vs. bad.
