I'm not green to electronics, but I still like to prototype parts of each circuit before committing them to the final ($$$) board. Home-brew is ideal for that, especially with the number of SMT parts available these days. Make board. Test. Crap, doesn't work. Make changes. Make another board. Test. Etc.
