I picked up my Hinari toaster oven from the Eastbourne Argos showroom this
afternoon. It looks like it should form the basis of a good reflow oven,
especially as it only cost £19.95.
It's got two quartz IR elements, one above and one below the rack. I suppose
I could use them both together at a low temperature for preheating the
board, then switch the lower one off and increase the heat from the top one
for the actual reflow operation.
I've downloaded the Elektor article about using toaster ovens for reflow
soldering, as well as the PCB design and the firmware for the controller. I
think I'll make or buy a thermocouple first, to check the uniformity of the
heating in the oven.
Argos doesn't have any of these ovens left in their warehouse, you will have
to find out which stores still have them and reserve one. I think that
Amazon has them at the same price, but you will have to pay for delivery.
