If the tape load works, then so will the tape backup, so dump the
sounds to tape, change the battery, and reload them afterwards again.

Rescue tape? Feh! That's just something to con guitarists who buy
synths out of $20 :D

Jesting aside, I would guess that the dump can be done through Midi
more effectively (ah - hang on - not all Poly61s have MIDI)

Plan B would be to wipe all program data and reprogram it all from
scratch. It's quite possible to do this with a Poly61 - I've done it
with a Polysix and a Juno60 before - a bit of careful planning, and
you can get your own soundset in there quite effectively.
