I think I already had a similar issue after wiping out my patches by mistake when I installed the turbo pack. There was nothing left to hear but random noises at low volume I could only hear on a few patches, but most of the patches made no sound. It also displayed meaningless caracters.

When you say "the display sort of randomly stops working, and random lights come on in various places" you mean the numbers display shows up caracters that doesn't make any sense?

If you change the patches and try many of them with high volume, can you hear random noises?

If the answer is yes to both questions, you should try to restore the patches with the tape procedure.

Does sound like it might be the battery.

I don't think it's the battery, but maybe it is. When I plug it in and turn it on, it starts to boot, the little digital number display displays "80" I think, and then it won't make noise, and the display sort of randomly stops working, and random lights come on in various places. No sound. Does that sound like a battery issue?
