It's a way to group news sources into one UI (the RSS Reader) so you
don't have to physically (virtually?!?) go to a site for the latest
poop. You can scan the headlines in your reader and click for the
full text.
Depending on your platform, there are many readers out there. If
you're on a Mac, Safari has RSS (and ATOM) built in and it works
great. I use the Wizz Computers RSS plug-in for Firefox. There are
stand-alone readers, too, if that's your thing: google RSS Reader and
you'll get a lot of hits.
Currently the MOTM, Cyndustries, E.A.R., and Metalbox groups have RSS
feeds that make it very convenient to keep up to date. I don't get
emails: too much mailbox clutter.
