The AN1x Assign Knobs are a mixed blessing. You can program each of
the eight Knobs to transmit the MIDI CC of your choice (but not
NRPNs/RRPNs) along with the X/Z access of the Ribbon Control, MW,
Foot Pedals, etc. but, the problem lies in controlling multiple
devices - you can only store one, global configuration for the Assign
Knobs et al. You could of course perform a Bulk Dump of ∗only∗ the
System settings to a stand alone MIDI Filer or your SysEx utility and
restore them on the fly but that's kind of a headache.
Alternately, you could use a Environment Layer in Logic or a Mixer
Map in Cubase to remap the default MIDI CCs transmitted by the AN1x
to those expected by your hardware or softsynths (this is the
approache I've taken.) I'm aware of some current MIDI CC remappers
making the rounds - probbably picked up on it at OSXAudio or KVR-VST -
but I'm hard pressed to recall any by name :-/
I think both of us would acknowledge this type of functionality is
still pretty esoteric to a majority of keyboard players users but
given the popularity of these small, mobile controllers perhaps
peoples expectations regarding ease of use are being heigntened...
