Dudes/Ladies,
We who play rock apparently for the most part do not understand and
appreciate the sounds we get at the bargain prices we pay. Ok, I'll
certainly agree that $5k seems like a lot. But that's a lot of sound as
well.
I know some musicians in local symphonies (Balto. & DC) and took a look
at their union newspaper classifieds a few years ago. There was not one
violin posted for under $10,000 and when you got into the larger instruments
like cellos... whoa... like $50,000. And some doublebasses for more than
$100,000. A Stradivarius was more than half a million if I remember right.
Think about it - they get for their money exactly ONE sound. Maybe more
if you're considering technique, but all in all... long live rock.
Now where I envy them is the road trip and setup. One tuxedo, one
instrument, one case. Put it on, take it out, sit your butt down and play -
bow, put it back, go home and change. Saturday I'll be performing at an
important yearly event and taking no less than 3 keyboards on an A-frame, a
12 space rack, 3 guitars, a bass, a combo guit amp with 4x12 cabinet, two
12" monitors and miles of cables, snakes and MIDI connectors. I will be
enjoying myself, though.
