I, personally, have never had any problems with either scenario, but some users report problems when turning on the computer with the AN1x already powered on and in place. I don't think you can damage anything -- MIDI is a pretty robust interface, and was designed to withstand power cycling -- but you may find that one of the ways causes "MIDI error" kinds of messages on the AN1x.

You should be able to use any interface. I say "should," because some users have had problems with certain interfaces under Win2K and WinXP. I have had issues with the joystick interface on my Via motherboard under Win2K. Under Win98Se, I've had much better luck, and have yet to find an interface that doesn't work with ANY musical/MIDI program.
