I don't have an answer to your specific question regarding your Yamaha MIDI Interface and AN!xEdit under VMWare, but I do have some suggestions to help you back-up your data so you can replace the Battery in your AN1x.
1) If you use a DAW such as Logic, Live, Cubase, Digi Performer, etc. you can simply are a track to record and perform a Bulk Dump from your AN1x and record the output - saving it as a .MID file.
2) SysEx Librarian for Mac OS X (freeware)
http://www.snoize.com/SysExLibrarian/-- has worked very nicely with my AN1x
3) AN-Factory 2.1 for Mac (pay ware)
http://www.xfactory-librarians.co.uk/-- I spent a Sunday afternoon trying this out and it's a very nice, cross platform Librarian that handles .an1 format very well. Also I intend to purchase a license sometime in the near future.
Hope this helps.

The problem is that the editor keeps freezing whenever I try to do something in it (even if the MIDI interfaces are set to Soundblaster). It freezes right away when I try to set midi in and out to USB (UX16) I installed MidiOX in Vmware and that works just fine (both interfaces in/out set to UX16). I ensured that only Windows has access to the USB device and not OSX so i dont think its a conflict.
