The problem lies more with knowing how that sound was created in the first place. All these old designs often tended to rely on odd parameters, often unspecified, of the components that you just wouldn't do nowadays as high quality components are so much cheaper.

An extreme case, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's some old product out there that relies on the non-linearity of a 10% carbon resistor :-)

So I remember a time a few years in the past when people were really
upset that OTAs were being discontinued, because they were apparently
the only way to build some things with voltage control. I don't know
if those have been fully replaced with VCAs in their role.

Here's another thought. Replacing a resistor with a semiconductor
doesn't just add resistance, it can also add capacitance. Maybe that
changes things. Also, now the item is ever so slightly non linear
rather than being linear. That's another thing.

All three of those things seem like they could cause either issues (eg
capacitance somewhere makes a thing just not work at all) or could
change the sound. But I don't have any concrete examples, so I'm
hoping this will jog someone's memory.
