<div>Coming from the world where MPU-401's were over $500, I don't find $20 for a USB-to-MIDI cable too much of a bother. As others have mentioned there are both hardware and firmware problems in those $5 black case models. For the DIY'ers among us there are
at least two open source projects out there where you can solder up your own replacement board and replace the guts. One is based on an 8051 and the other an STM32. </div>
