The '165 has a useful sidekick in the '166, and both of them have serial-to-parallel cousins in the 74HC594 and '595. I don't think there's so many options for the 400-series chips. <br class=""><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">I learned about logic circuit using 400-series circuits and a 9V battery on my breadboard about 40 years ago.
