By that point in time we rarely made eyeglasses out of actual glass anymore but when we did the lenses had to be tempered and drop-tested. Tempering required baking them at a high temperature in a strong base (probably sodium hydroxide) for several hours. We had a special "crock pot" for doing this. One day we heard that at another lab an employee washed her hands before reaching for the bail to pull out the basket containing the lenses. Small droplets of water fell from her hand into the lens-nectar and BAM! It exploded all over the lab.</div><div><br class=""></div><div>Needless to say they had her under the emergency shower as fast as they could drag her to it. The EMTs sliced her clothes off. I can't remember now if she was wearing goggles or not (I would have). She was very seriously injured and probably scarred for life.</div><div><br class=""></div><div>That was 32 years ago. Today this would never be allowed. Eyeglasses are outsourced these days.</div><div><br class=""></div><div>Oh yeah, they wanted all of the gentlemen to wear neckties with their lab coats. The ladies were given a ruffle which was universally hated. There were power tools in that lab that you could snag a tie on.
