My homebuilt modular studio cases, each 12U x 104HP typically draw about 4A @ +/-12V and a minor amount at 5V with approximately 35-40 modules of various types (mostly analog and some digital). I have cooling slots near the top of the back panel and find that convection cooling is more than adequate. Besides, fan noise is a problem in the studio!

I've experimented with linear and switching supplies, with linear supplies (I use two Konstant Lab ZDROJ) much preferred for low noise audio processing (analog hexaphonic guitar effects processing). For typical modular synth applications the switching supplies seem to be fine (two or more Mean Well RT65B).
