We're actually directionally deaf for middle frequencies with medium wavelengths. Although stereo salesmen were fond of telling you that you only need one subwoofer since we're directionally deaf at low frequencies, that's actually not a limitation of the human brain (see above). What is true is that pan-pot based "multi-mono" mixing produces a sound field that has no directional information in the low frequencies. A binaural recording - or a modern mix that uses inter channel delays - does not have this limitation (so you'll need multiple subwoofers).<br class=""></blockquote><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">OTOH the low frequencies in a typical listening scenario in room acoustics are sound fields from room mode excitations etc rather than directional waves, so what is heard is to large extent something unintentional. This is valid for both recordings made, and sound replayed, in rooms. Perhaps it's more relevant to talk about "intended information" rather than "stereo content" or "directional sound" in the bass region. Often there is no intended directional information there, so a low-frequency mono signal is appropriate even if the recording had something else.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 0.8ex;border-left:1px solid rgb(204,204,204);padding-left:1ex">So, the comments about certain pan laws going "over the top of your head" when...<br class=""></blockquote><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Speaking of over the tops of heads - Merry Christmas! *<:-)</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">/mr</div></div></div>
