Just downloaded KiCAD to try, got to say I'm impressed so far.

It's come a long way since I last tried it.

There's a few real differences between it and eagle, but then hey that's the same for pretty much any type of software. I'll give it a go in anger over the next few weekends.

Key things for me;

* ease of creating parts (symbol and footprint)

* DRC capability

* Multi-layer routing (4 to 6 layer)

Things I like so far;

* 3D viewer, awesome

* being able to turn on/off layers without having to dive into a menu and stop what I'm doing (I use user defined function keys at the moment in wagle)

* love the hierarchical sheets (that always drove me nuts with eagle)

* being able to see nets on tracks AND pins when zoomed in.

So I'll be giving it a try, including importing my existing Eagle Schematics and PCBs, and hopefully some Eagle Libraries too.

by that argument you could also say you want the gas pedal in your car to be on the left side instead of right and the car should work how you want it to work. I'd say if you press the brake and expect the car to accelerate that is a user error.

It might be that in some programs you just drag an object to move it.
I don't see a problem in kicads way to move object by pointing the mouse over it and press the "m" key to move it.

if you want to move a component without breaking the wire you have to hold the "strg" key on the keyboard... or use "g" instead of "m"

I tried it with the version which was most recent a couple days ago, and uninstalled it again because of that - and reading that it's known, longstanding and they don't care - which about tells me how wise it is to sink any time into that package.

> Ok, I'm using the linux version and take my version from the latest build and not the old stable branch that is behind a lot of versions...

So you're saying their "stable build" is the f'ed up one, and you're supposed to use the betas?
(with regards to outright bugs like hard-coded paths of the "it works on my machine award" kind - do they test the stuff before unleashing it?)

No I just say I've been using it for the past 5 years, also for commercial projects, and like using it.
Never encountered a real show stopper.
I don't say it is perfect and I admit it still needs a lot of work in some areas, but I can perfectly work with the program.
I even think it is much better than for example LT Spice ;) and I much prefer it over eagle.

hmmm... been using kicad for a few years now.
Most of what he describes are user errors or just don't happen in the build I use (zooming for example is always mouse pointer centric).
Ok, I'm using the linux version and take my version from the latest build and not the old stable branch that is behind a lot of versions...

I don't say it is perfect and for sure has some annoying behaviors, but I really like working with it and I could not do any PCBs anymore without "push and shove" and really like that it's currently getting a spice integration.
I'm tempted to look into it some more as Eagle is getting a bit pricey.

Kicad might be worth looking into. It's reliable, easy to work with,
doesn't lock your drawings up in proprietary file formats and you can't
argue with the price.
