The Forest Mims books were available in Radio Shack.... until my
local RS closed.
The pocket manuals covered topics but one particular good complete
book is
GETTING STARTED IN ELECTRONICS by FORREST M MIMS
which now can be downloaded for free all over the internet.
It is a copyrighted book so I don't understand why it is available
everywhere as PDF.
The first 100 pages of this book teaches what components do with
detail examples drawn
for newbies and then the last 27 pages shows complete example
circuits that work.
One particular circuit of interest is page 105 High voltage power
supply.... 170 volts output from a 9 volt battery...
nothing to kill you ... not a taser... but it will cure back pain if
built as a TENS unit.
to learn electronics, I highly recommend Malvino's "Electronic
all probably
very similar.

Also, you'll want a good opamp applications book. I recommend
Coughlin and
Driscoll, "Operationals Amplifiers and Linear Integrated
Circuits." It can
be downloaded for free. Also, you'll need Walter Jung's "IC
Op-Amp
Cookbook." That's really the opamp bible.

Finally, at some point, you'll probably want a copy of
Horowitz and Hill,
"The Art of Electronics," although this book is not good for
complete
beginners.

Anything by Don Lancaster is good too.
